"Nursing Strikes"

Opposite to the growth spurt of a breastfeeding baby, there are also "nursing strikes". This occurs when a healthy baby suddenly cuts back or refuses to nurse. If you are experiencing this, do not take it personally. Your baby is not weaning! "Nursing strikes" have been linked to accomplishing a major developmental milestone (i.e. learning to roll, crawl), the return of the mother's menstrual periods and even new soaps or perfumes. Typically, "nursing strikes" last a few days. During this time it is important to offer your baby the breast and pump to maintain your milk supply. Try nursing your baby in a quiet place when your baby is sleepy. You will need to feed your baby with a bottle or cup while you are reestablishing breastfeeding. If you feel that the "nursing strike" is due to an illness or persists for more than a few days, please contact your baby's health care provider to have him assessed.
